Look!! Up in the sky – it’s a bird! It’s a plane … Well, sorta; it’s actually a helicopter and if it’s being flown anywhere near USS Abraham Lincoln these days, there’s a good chance it’s being piloted by Lt. Rebekah Saxon. Assigned to the Golden Falcons of Helicopter Sea Combat Squadron (HSC) 12, Rebekah’s current position as the squadron’s quality assurance officer requires her to perform duties not normally associated with flying; however, it’s still an awesome job that keeps her “grounded,” and “is hands down the best job I have had to do in my squadron.”  Rebekah came down from her perch in the sky for a little while to share her thoughts on being in the Navy, and to talk about how cool it is to be a pilot in the U.S. Navy …  Enter to get a bird’s-eye view into Rebekah’s world.

Serving in the Navy is something I can always be proud of. The privilege to mentor young Sailors who volunteered to serve their country is what I truly cherish. What makes this opportunity so unique is the thousands of others around me who made the same choice of service.

I have really enjoyed my role as a helicopter pilot for the Navy.  I am currently serving on my second deployment in 5th Fleet with the USS Abraham Lincoln as a part of Helicopter Sea Combat Squadron (HSC) 12. The role I have been filling as a mission commander during events such as the ship’s transit through the Strait of Hormuz, has given me a much better perspective as to exactly how capable the U.S. Navy is, and what we can bring to the fight.

It makes me proud to be part of such a strong team, and to work side-by-side with each and every person in this truly amazing, all-volunteer service.

Flying is a dynamic feeling. We train a lot and conduct various missions. It is always a different feeling each time we go up. A lot of times, we just fly and talk to each other. I am glad I have a great crew that I work with. I always thought that there was something really cool about being a Navy pilot. I did well in flight school, and I thought just helicopters were more suited for me. Flying helicopters has put me in San Diego which is close enough to my home in Northern California. Not to mention It lets me do a job that is kind of crazy and different among my friends and family. “The central part of having a good crew is having great communication. Sometimes, it is as much as keeping each other motivated during long flights. Most of all it's trusting that the other person knows what they are doing, and that they are able to do it safely. I love to work out. I go in and out of phases, so I like to change things up a lot. In that sense it’s difficult on the ship, but I love doing the outdoor runs on the flight deck; I haven’t missed one yet! They are really nice, and I wish we did them once a week. Anything that breaks me out of my work routine and keeps me healthy is great for me.
